Job Title: Nuclear Medicine (PET/CT) Technologist

Department: Clinical Research Reports To: Associate Director of Clinical Research Affairs Personnel Reporting To: N/A Purpose of the position/Job Summary: Administers radiopharmaceuticals and collects imaging data using investigational Nuclear Medicine procedures. Scope & Impact: The Nuclear Medicine Research Technologist is qualified to operate diagnostic imaging equipment. She/he prepares and administers radiopharmaceutical injections within the scope of their training, certification and licensure in a Research setting. Major Responsibilities:

  • Administer radiopharmaceuticals intravenously under the direction of the nuclear medicine physician or authorized user.
  • Calculate, measure and record radiation dosage of radiopharmaceuticals received, used and disposed under the direction of the nuclear medicine physician.
  • Explain test procedures and safety precautions to subjects and provide them with assistance during procedures.
  • Effectively communicate with subjects and family members; has the ability to explain test procedures and safety precautions to persons of different educational backgrounds or culture.
  • Empathic, patient, and able to offer assistance to anxious or cognitively compromised patients during what can be a disorienting and stressful procedure.
  • Dispose of radioactive materials and store radiopharmaceuticals following all NRC requirements and MNI SOP’s.
  • Maintain and calibrate isotope and laboratory equipment.
  • Perform quality control checks on laboratory equipment or cameras.
  • Ability to competently operate SPECT, PET and PET-CT diagnostic equipment.
  • Reconstruct image data for subsequent quantitative analyses applying appropriate corrections for attenuation, randoms, scatters, motion, etc. per direction of the nuclear medicine physician or physicist.
  • Performs transfer and back-up of imaging data
  • Provides images for data analysis and patient information for diagnostic interpretation when required.
  • Evaluate images to determine the technical quality and calibration of instrumentation.
  • Performs appropriate quality controls on imaging equipment and maintains active quality control information to assure the safe and appropriate use of imaging equipment and radiopharmaceuticals for research and studies.
  • Performs veinipuncture or catheterization to provide access for the administration of radiopharmaceuticals, and fluids or the removal of blood for metabolite, survival, or recovery (of the radiopharmaceutical) analysis.
  • Provides images for projects and publications.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Monitors radiation work areas (wipe testing, weekly surveys) and other areas as needed.
  • Provides data quality assurance (data flow, and storage).
  • Assists with the coordination of studies when MNI is the imaging facility for other research sites.
  • Maintains quarterly equipment (dose calibrator) linearity and constancy checks.
  • Monitors imaging inventory, ordering supplies when needed.
  • Participates in company meetings and committee work as required
  • Oversees radiation safety badge program
  • May draft papers for publication and/or presentation as requested.
  • Additional responsibilities as deemed necessary by supervisor

Qualifications (required):

  • Must be a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist, CNMT or R.T.(N)(ARRT), by either the NMTCB or ARRT
  • Must be a Certified CT Technologist, R.T.(CT)(ARRT), by the ARRT
  • Prior PET or PET/CT Imaging experience required
  • Flexibility to work a rotating and extended schedule
  • Ability to lift a minimum 50 pounds (22.7 kg)
  • Ability to position and reposition subjects on SPECT, PET, & PET/CT scanners
  • 4-year bachelor’s degree and 5 years relevant experience preferred, but not required
  • BLS/ACLS certification preferred
