Reason for this eight-member group's search is twofold. They have a partner who has been with the group many years went part-time (half time) this past summer and quite possibly planning to retire completely in the near future. As well, their hospital is expanding its ER to nearly double what it is now and that is only going to make things busier. With hiring a MSK person that started with them a year ago, a summer 2009 person would put them in a good position of keeping up with their volume and they would also talk to a 2010 candidate right now as well. All they need is a solid general radiologist, or two, able to do everything (short of complex interventional) that isn't looking for a certain amount of time in any one modality. Taking your fair share of mammo is a must but nothing more than anyone else has to do. If a candidate has mammo abilities and even the capability to do a stereotactic breast biopsy, then they could put that to use, but they are looking more for a generalist/MRI person who can do everything especially MRI and CT. Overall, seven people in the group do mammo, nearly all do biopsies and drainages, and angio abilities are not something they need. Three docs do all of the angio and no one will have to worry about any after-hours interventional work. This is a very stable opportunity with a very stable group that has been in place for 30+ years. This is more of a great lifestyle practice than it is a sweatshop, make the most money you can, kind of a practice. This group covers a single, 325-bed hospital that could not be more attractive. It is fairly new with it only being 11-12 years old. And they also cover an outpatient-imaging center for a local multi-specialty clinic. This is a 100% fair and equal partnership with everything being democratic and equal almost to a fault. Partners make the same money, take the same call, same amount of vacation, etc. They are looking for nothing but a long-term person who is coming here to stay. Someone looking to make $600-700K a year and work late nights is not going to be happy here, but someone who can live on $450K and can appreciate the gorgeous scenery surrounding them, as well as the great lifestyle the practice offers, then that is the kind of person they want to bring into the group. These are very nice, friendly people who all get along very well, like each other a lot, been together a long time and actually do a lot of socializing outside of work. They would like to have someone who could appreciate being a part of a team of radiologists who are always looking for ways to pick each other up, ways to improve the efficiency of the department, etc. People who come here usually stay until retirement. They want the right kind of people who are friendly, down to earth, service oriented, tactful when wanting to present an idea of how to better do something, and most importantly, someone with a partnership mentality. The age ranges, except for the eventual retiring guy, are from 34-57, all with strong training backgrounds (Bowman Gray, UNC, UVA, Tulane, MUSC, and Vanderbilt are some of the places), several are fellowship trained, but whether someone brings fellowship training is optional. Their equipment is excellent with a 3.0 T MRI and currently have a 16-slice CT. But with hospital expanding its ER and from that the group plans to get a 64-slice CT out of the deal within the next year or so. They are busting at the seams with 100+ CTs a day and the MR volume is growing like crazy. They have a fully implemented PACS system with everything being read on it except mammo. So, with a nighthawk service that takes over at midnight, they are about as efficient as a group can be. They feel their best chances of getting what they’re looking for is to find someone with ties to the area, but are open to considering anyone with the clinical qualifications they are looking for. You would be hard-pressed to find a more gorgeous area of the country. They are in the Appalachian Mountains, also known as the Great Smoky Mountains, and it is about as serene as it can be.
Call: Will be 1:8 general call and they have a nighthawk service that takes over at 12:00 a.m. and covers the department until 6 a.m. One guy comes in at 6:30 a.m. and gets off at 3:30 and the rest come in at 8:00 a.m. and they rotate the “early guy” position as well. Late person for the week comes in at 6 p.m. and works until nighthawk takes over, also rotated equally.
Community: _An utterly gorgeous part of the country in the Mountains. It is roughly 40,000 people and they have all modern conveniences and decent places to eat, shopping, etc. Lots of outdoors things to do including boating (several lakes in the area), water skiing, hiking in the mountains, hunting, fishing, etc. The public schools are excellent, but there are private school options available as well. It is a well-employed community with less than the national average unemployment and a fairly good payer mix. There is a regional airport that serves the tri-cities and the cost of living is very low compared with metro areas. You’re very close to the NC border and just a few hour car ride from CharlotteWinston-Salem, and other NC cities. But your nearest larger city will be Knoxville, about 100 minutes west and so very close (80 miles) to Asheville, NC and all of its surrounding resort communities. This is an excellent place to raise a family and an envious place to be in if you and/or your spouse thrive living in beautiful scenery with nice neighbors.
