About Radiology Jobs

According to the AMA, only 1.2% of physicians specialize in radiology (compare that with 16.7% of physicians that practice the specialty of internal medicine). The radiologist is unlike other physicians because diagnoses and interpretations are made from medical images. Images are taken in a variety of ways by using x-rays or with radioactive substances. Some images are produced by sound waves or the body's innate magnetism. Along with the medical image findings, a radiologist correlates them with other tests, and makes recommendations for additional examinations or treatments.(Source: radiologyinfo.com)

Section Chief - Mammography

The Department of Radiology at this New England academic medical center is seeking a Director of the Mammography division. The department consists of three campuses less than one mile apart, with in excess of 800 beds combined. There is also a Cancer Center of Excellence with clinical and research trials, as well as a nationally acclaimed Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence that provides collaborative efforts among specialties.

In addition to the administrative duties, you will be committed to full time breast imaging. Current staffing is two and a half dedicated breast imagers, with support and assistance from several other staff radiologists as needed. Full-time radiology staffing is 40 + radiologists. The growth of the section will allow you the opportunity to staff at least one additional breast imager as you deem necessary. There is a strong basic science group in radiology physics, heavily involved in breast imaging research. The principle investigator has 20 years of experience and has had 10 NIH grants.

The medical center recently instituted and is executing their plan to replace all imaging equipment. Current state-of-the-art technology includes PACS/RIS/VR, PET/CT, digital mammography and dedicated breast MRI, dedicated interventional and neurointerventional suites, five MDCT scanners including 2 64 slice units; four 1.5 T MR systems, and direct digital radiography.

The department has a $6,000,000 annual research budget with $4,000,000 NIH. There are six separate basic science research programs including nuclear medicine PET/Spect, molecular imaging, digital imaging, fMR and stroke. There is approximately 6,000 square feet of research space. Technology includes 3T MR, animal angio suite, hyperpolarized gas, and small bore MR animal imaging.

The breast imaging section enjoys no call, nights or weekends!

Academic responsibilities will include teaching of medical students, as well as supervising and teaching the residents and fellows. The residency program has a strong ABR pass rate, and consists of 16 residents. There is initiative underway to increase that to 20 residents over the next few years.

You will have a faculty appointment at the Medical School with rank and compensation commensurate with experience. Compensation is very generous within the realm of academia and negotiable based on experience and skill set. Benefits include: 8 weeks vacation; 10 holidays, Malpractice Insurance, CME stipend, medical, disability, dental, life & vision insurance; dual retirement accounts and a negotiable relocation package.

Candidates of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply!
