Lead Scientist - High Field MRI Independent Investigator

Carle Foundation Hospital is seeking additional lead scientists to build our core faculty for our newly formed Center for Clinical Imaging Research in Urbana, Illinois.

Position Details Include:

Scientists will be hired at the ranks of Assistant, Associate, and/or Professor Scientist and will lead research groups in the areas of neuroscience, oncology, heart and vascular diseases, and digestive health. There is also strong interest in the area of rural health. Successful applicants will be expected to conceptualize, develop, and lead projects, as well as establish independent externally-funded research programs. Each Scientist will be responsible for leading research groups, securing external funding through competitive proposals, and submitting peer-reviewed publications. In addition, these Scientists will provide leadership and key technical expertise in collaborative imaging research projects between Carle researchers and University of Illinois investigators and students. Supervision of post-docs, students, and medical residents will also form part of the core responsibilities. These key scientists also have the potential to be appointed at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. Additional academic appointments will be possible in the relevant university departments as well as at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. The Beckman Institute’s Biomedical Imaging Center has two Siemens 3T Prisma systems and supports a wide range of collaborative research in MRI technology and applications across the UIUC campus. Interaction with existing MRI groups at the Beckman Institute is encouraged. Carle is making a multi-million dollar investment in its own research infrastructure, as well as having contributed ~$100 million into the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, a joint enterprise between Carle Foundation and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). The focus of the Center will be on clinical applications of high field MRI, and will concentrate on areas closely aligned to one of Carle Foundation’s major research pillars, which are: neuroscience, oncology, heart and vascular diseases, and digestive health. There is also strong interest in the area of rural health. Carle Foundation Hospital, in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), have recently placed an order for a Siemens 7 Tesla Terra, to be installed in July 2020, which will be fully available for clinical use and clinical research. In addition there are also a Siemens 3 Tesla Prisma system, a 3 Tesla Vida system and a Siemens 1.5 Tesla Sola system available for research.

Specialized knowledge and skills requirements:

All applicants must have PhD degree in relevant field.

Expertise in medical imaging; knowledge of MRI procedures and protocols; critical thinking and analytics skills; demonstrated record of success in scientific research, including peer-reviewed publications and competitive internal and external funding; technical writing skill; excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills; efficient organizational and time management skills; ability to work effectively and collaboratively with multidisciplinary investigators who come with a wide range of experience in research; understanding of regulatory requirements in a clinical setting; attention to detail; service oriented; ability to work in a fast-paced office environment with multiple deadlines.
